Taken From The Evil To Come

Label: Release Date: 17/03/2003

A double album collection of mainly instrumental, atmospheric sounds with ambience. In other words – post-rock. This is not a bad album but it’s not particularly life-changing either.

The problem here is that while Up-C Down-C may have an original name (a reference to a ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ cheat, if I’m not mistaken), their music leans too heavily on that of their influences of Mogwai and Godspeed. The quiet/loud dynamics don’t give it the lift it should have due to the naff production (it is a self-funded release, after all). ‘My Wings Are Far Too Beautiful’ is an exception to this, veering from white noise to quiet noodlings and more NOISE with pleasing neighbour-annoying volume.

Mainly though, it sounds moody and pissed off and po-faced. It lacks the tongue in cheek humour of The Rock Of Travolta, and mostly lacks any true REAL emotion. I want to WEEP when I hear this kinda shit, not be left in the cold. I would suggest Upsydownsy discard the post-rockin’ LPs for a bit and stew on a diet of country murder ballads for a while.
