Hard To Beat
Label: Necessary Records Release Date: 13/06/2005
Sometimes expectation and critical snobbery are thrown out of the window. Sometimes something so utterly undeniable comes your way that it leads you to drop to your knees and worship the god of the pop tune.
That "sometimes" in this example is ‘Hard To Beat’, a bastard lovechild of The Clash* and Daft Punk. Filtered disco guitars mix with Richard Archer*’s gruff vocals to concoct the most infectious tune this side of a Kaiser Chief. Yes, it’s utterly throw away, yes it won’t be here in three months time, yes it’s about as timeless as a copy of last week’s Sun, but who cares?
Today, yesterday and until somewhere around late August ‘Hard To Beat’ is amazing and is the perfect summation of the classic British summer. Knotted handkerchiefs and dodgy disco biscuits at the ready…
